Vietnam’s VNREDSat-1 satellite program has laid the groundwork for a robust partnership with France in space technology, promising advancements in next-generation satellites, technology transfer, and enhanced domestic capabilities. Officially launched on May 7, 2013, VNREDSat-1 marked Vietnam’s entry into Earth observation satellite operations and continues to function in 2026, well beyond its expected five-year lifespan, now celebrating 14 years of service.
The initiative has not only been pivotal in satellite operations but also in cultivating local expertise. From 2011 to 2013, Vietnamese engineers underwent intensive training both in France and Vietnam, mastering system design, satellite management, and problem-solving. This training has empowered them to address technical issues independently, showcasing a transition to developing in-house solutions rather than relying solely on transferred procedures. Additionally, Vietnam has established an integrated remote-sensing system for managing imaging requests, controlling satellites, and processing data. Since 2020, VNREDSat-1 has provided nearly 30,000 satellite images, aiding environmental management, disaster monitoring, scientific research, and socio-economic and defense activities.
According to Trần Hồng Thái, President of the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology, the program has been crucial in establishing a technical and human-resource foundation for future satellite endeavors. However, he emphasized that achieving technological self-reliance will necessitate further advancements in satellite design, payloads, electronics, flight software, assembly, testing, and ground systems.
A new chapter in Vietnam-France space cooperation was initiated during French President Emmanuel Macron’s state visit to Vietnam in May 2025. During this visit, the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology, Airbus Defence and Space, and the French National Centre for Space Studies signed a declaration of intent to collaborate long-term in space technology and Earth observation. This partnership is exploring a next-generation Earth observation system and the technological framework for a potential VNREDSat-2.
Future collaborations are expected to enhance Vietnamese involvement in mission planning, system design, subsystem development, software testing, and data applications. Opportunities for building stronger domestic expertise may arise in areas such as control software, remote-sensing image processing, artificial intelligence, ground systems, and specific sensors and payloads. The overarching goal is to shift from purchasing satellite systems to co-developing them, enabling Vietnamese scientists and engineers to progressively design, operate, troubleshoot, and ultimately develop future satellite technologies independently.
