The collaborative efforts between the UK and France are expected to increase the number of French officers addressing this issue to nearly 1,050. These expanded teams will include specialists dedicated to confiscating smuggling equipment and arresting culprits, supported by additional intelligence and coastal units. Recent statistics indicate that small boat crossings have decreased to their lowest in seven years, a trend migration experts believe is influenced by improved security conditions in regions like Syria.
In addition to migration, Prime Minister Burnham will seek President Macron’s backing for strengthening UK-EU relations. The UK is particularly interested in renegotiating agreements with the European Union to enhance trade relations, with a focus on sectors such as electricity and agricultural products. These discussions aim to foster a more robust economic partnership between the UK and the EU.
The meeting may also touch upon a proposed youth mobility scheme that would facilitate the movement of young people between the UK and European countries. This plan includes arrangements for European students to access British universities at domestic fee rates.
