Keir Starmer, the outgoing British Prime Minister, has secured a significant diplomatic achievement by finalizing the India-UK Free Trade Agreement (FTA) just before announcing his resignation. During discussions with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the 2026 G7 Summit, the leaders agreed to implement the India-UK Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) on July 15. This landmark agreement is anticipated to enhance the already robust trade relationship between the two nations, valued at approximately £48 billion annually.
Starmer has been a staunch advocate for bolstering ties with India, making the trade agreement a central goal of his administration. He emphasized the potential for economic growth, citing India’s increasing global economic stature and the advantages of more efficient and cost-effective trade between the countries. Since taking over as Labour leader after the party’s defeat in the 2019 elections, Starmer has focused on strengthening connections with the British Indian community and fostering a closer partnership with India. Under his leadership, the Labour Party pledged to deepen cooperation with India in areas such as trade, security, education, technology, and climate change initiatives.
Before his political career, Starmer had a distinguished track record in the legal field, where he served as the Director of Public Prosecutions. He ascended to the role of Prime Minister following Labour’s sweeping victory in the 2024 elections. Despite initial successes in stabilizing the economy and advancing domestic reforms, his tenure was marred by multiple policy challenges and political setbacks, which eventually undermined his leadership position.
In a heartfelt resignation speech, Starmer acknowledged that his parliamentary colleagues no longer viewed him as the right leader to guide Labour into the forthcoming general election. He expressed respect and gratitude for their decision, marking the conclusion of a notable era in British politics.
