Google is set to revolutionize its search bar with enhanced artificial intelligence capabilities, marking a significant upgrade to the world’s most-visited website. Announced at the Google I/O conference for software developers, the new search feature will handle longer and more conversational queries. This development is powered by Google’s latest AI model, Gemini 3.5, which enables users to interact more naturally with Google’s chatbot. This shift aims to offer more intuitive search results and integrates visual elements and suggestions for utilizing Google’s suite of products.
Elizabeth Reid, the head of Google Search, emphasized the scale of this transformation, describing it as the most substantial change in the nearly 30-year history of Google Search. The updates, available globally on both desktop and mobile platforms, now provide results that resemble visually enhanced AI Overviews rather than traditional link lists. Users still have the option to view the original list of links by selecting the “Web” tab. This update follows a trend of increasing user engagement with Google’s AI, as the chatbot interface has seen query numbers double each quarter since its launch a year ago.
In addition to the search enhancements, Google is venturing back into smart eyewear, collaborating with Samsung, Warby Parker, and Gentle Monster to launch “intelligent eyewear.” These glasses, equipped to take photos and videos via voice commands to the Gemini AI, are set to hit the market in the fall. This move comes after Google’s previous attempt with Google Glass in 2014, which was met with criticism and ultimately discontinued. However, the current market, buoyed by Meta’s success with similar technology, suggests a more receptive audience for Google’s new offerings.
Google’s Gemini model is designed to function as a “universal assistant,” providing a personal and proactive experience for users. With 900 million monthly users of the Gemini app, the AI is expanding its reach into everyday consumer use beyond tech-savvy circles. Subscribers to Google’s AI Pro and Ultra plans can create “information agents” for in-depth research and personalized summaries. These agents, alongside the new Gemini Spark feature, will utilize information from users’ Gmail and Google Calendar to assist with tasks such as shopping and planning trips.
The introduction of these advanced AI tools and smart eyewear illustrates Google’s commitment to integrating AI into daily life and expanding its user base. As these changes roll out, they highlight a broader industry trend towards making advanced technology accessible to a wider audience, paving the way for more interactive and personalized digital experiences.
