European Leaders Gather for Inaugural Carpathian 8 Summit Hosted by Zelensky

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has inaugurated the Carpathian 8 Summit in Ivano-Frankivsk Oblast, marking the launch of a new regional forum aimed at fostering cooperation among eight countries. The event, which runs from September 18 to 20, brings together leaders and officials to discuss key areas such as security, energy, and cross-border economic collaboration.

The summit sees participation from Ukraine, Poland, Romania, Serbia, Czechia, Hungary, Slovakia, and Austria. Notable attendees include Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, Romanian President Nicusor Dan, and Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic. Slovakia is represented by a senior foreign ministry official. The discussions focus on enhancing regional security and infrastructure, as well as improving transport and logistics systems.

Highlighting the summit’s economic agenda, approximately 500 business representatives have gathered to explore investment opportunities. President Zelensky announced that investment agreements and projects exceeding €1 billion are in preparation. Nearly 100 projects from participating countries are being showcased, emphasizing the potential for increased trade and investment across the Carpathian region.

The summit also underscores the importance of regional unity, with Poland reiterating its support for Ukraine amid its ongoing conflict. The discussions aim to facilitate closer coordination on Ukraine’s European integration efforts and address differing stances on military assistance to Kyiv. The forum seeks to strengthen economic ties and advance cooperation in the Carpathian area.

As the summit progresses, leaders are expected to deliberate on strategies for bolstering energy and transport infrastructure. By providing a platform for dialogue among nations with varied perspectives, the Carpathian 8 Summit aims to solidify regional cooperation and support the development of local communities.
