Thailand and France have decided to bolster their relationship to the level of a strategic partnership, following discussions between Thai Deputy Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul and French President Emmanuel Macron in Paris. The talks, held at the Élysée Palace, centered on enhancing collaboration in key sectors such as trade, investment, cybersecurity, defense, and advanced technology. Additionally, both leaders reviewed the latest regional developments affecting Cambodia and Myanmar.
The decision to deepen ties includes a focus on industries like alternative energy, aerospace, aviation, smart power grids, and artificial intelligence infrastructure. France also reiterated its commitment to finalize the Thailand-European Union free trade agreement by the end of the year. This agreement, which initially began in 2013 and paused in 2014 before resuming in 2023, promises significant economic benefits for both nations, according to Thai officials.
Defense and cybersecurity were also high on the agenda, with both countries pledging to enhance cooperation in these areas. Efforts will focus on tackling cybercrime, online scams, and transnational digital threats. On regional issues, Thailand emphasized its dedication to resolving border disputes with Cambodia through peaceful dialogue and adherence to international legal frameworks.
Furthermore, the two governments announced the implementation of the Joint Action Plan to Strengthen the Thai-French Partnership for 2026-2028, which will lay the groundwork for a formal strategic partnership. This plan reflects a commitment to advancing mutual interests and addressing shared challenges over the coming years.
During his visit to France, Anutin also engaged with executives from leading French companies, including Airbus, Imerys, EssilorLuxottica, IN Groupe, and Thales Group, to attract further investment into Thailand’s high-tech and future-oriented sectors. French businesses expressed confidence in Thailand’s investment climate, with Airbus confirming plans to expand its aviation and engineering operations within the country.
