IndiGo Halts Mumbai-Manchester Route Due to Cost and Airspace Issues

by admin477351

IndiGo, India’s largest airline, will temporarily halt its Mumbai-Manchester service starting August 31, 2026, due to ongoing airspace restrictions, extended flight times, and heightened operating costs. The decision reflects the broader challenges facing international air travel, driven by geopolitical issues, rising fuel prices, and disruptions in flight routes, which have collectively escalated the expense of maintaining long-haul operations.

As part of the suspension, IndiGo plans to return one of the six Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft leased from Norse Atlantic Airways. These planes were initially brought into the fleet in early 2025 to facilitate the airline’s expansion into the European market, in anticipation of the arrival of its own Airbus A350s. Despite the pause in the Manchester route, IndiGo reassures that its other long-haul international flights will continue as scheduled, emphasizing the temporary nature of this suspension.

IndiGo’s foray into Europe has been met with robust customer demand, aiding in establishing a significant presence in key international locations. However, the combination of longer flight durations due to airspace limitations, increased aviation fuel costs, and foreign exchange fluctuations has rendered the Manchester route financially unsustainable at present. Abhijit Dasgupta, Senior Vice President of Network Planning and Revenue Management, described the suspension as a regrettable but necessary measure under current circumstances, reaffirming the airline’s commitment to resuming services once conditions improve.

The airline also indicated it is actively seeking alternative ways to maintain its collaboration with Norse Atlantic Airways, aligning with its broader strategy for international growth. Passengers affected by the route suspension will receive advance notifications and assistance, including options for alternative travel arrangements or refunds if applicable.
